Brother laser printers use two separate components: a toner cartridge and a drum unit. The toner cartridge holds the powder that creates your text and images, while the drum unit transfers that toner onto the paper.

Your printer will display a “Replace Drum” message when it’s time to change the printer drum.

If the drum unit isn’t replaced when needed, print quality will start to decline – even if you’re using a brand-new toner cartridge. You might notice issues like faded or blurry prints, black or coloured spots, smeared toner, or thin vertical lines on your pages.

As a general rule, you’ll need to replace the drum unit after using 3 to 4 toner cartridges.
