Sometimes we think Brother adds a new printer to its lineup just to make up the numbers, and the Brother MFC-L2880DWXL is a case in point. It’s an excellent choice for home office and small businesses who want an A4 multifunction laser printer but don’t need colour, but so too is the Brother MFC-L2920DW and you have to look closely to spot the differences.

This printer is more expensive than the MFC-L2920DW yet it has fewer features: no NFC connectivity, and limited advanced security features (like Active Directory and LDAP user authentication, Secure Boot, and firmware encryption, all included in the MFC-L2920DW). So why the higher price? The answer comes down to what’s in the box. With the MFC-L2880DWXL you get a full-size TN2530XXL toner cartridge, manufacturer-rated to print up to 5,000 pages, where the cheaper MFC-L2920DW comes with in-box toner that will only print up to 1,500 pages.

Besides the difference in toner cartridges, and the availability (or lack) of NFC and advanced security features, the two printers are near identical. You get print speeds of up to 34 A4 pages a minute, automatic double-sided printing (up to 16 pages a minute). Print resolution is up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, with 600 x 600 dpi scan resolution. Both printers come with a 50-sheet automatic document feeder for efficient scanning, copying, and faxing. Connectivity options include Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, and USB, while mobile users can easily connect with Apple AirPrint, Mopria, or Wi-Fi Direct. There’s also a large 8.8cm colour touchscreen for easy task management.

The MFC-L2880DWXL also offers a range of toner cartridge options to suit different printing needs:

But why pay the extra dollars for the MFC-L2880DWXL? All in all, we think the MFC-L2920DW is the better deal, but maybe it’s just that you prefer a black printer (the MFC-L2920DW is white). Otherwise, you have to want the extra in-box toner, and you might prefer a simpler printer (one without NFC connectivity and enhanced security features that you might not need).

Notably, this printer is also intended for lighter printing duties, with a recommended monthly volume of up to 1,500 pages a month (compared with up to 2,000 pages a month for the MFC-L2920DW).

Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions.
