While the Brother MFC-J1010dw has all the functionality you might need for your home or small business office, it won’t win any beauty contests. But if you can look beyond its plain beige-grey ho-hum 1980s-inspired design, you will see it’s a capable and reasonably priced printer, scanner, copier, and fax machine.

Small enough that you can put it almost anywhere, the Brother MFC-J1010dw is quick and simple to set up and get working. You can connect to print via USB, Ethernet, or wireless, and print from mobile devices using Brother Mobile Connect, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria.

It comes with a 150-sheet paper tray and prints double-sided pages automatically. But this is not a printer for excessive use — the recommended monthly print volume is up to 1,000 pages per month. There’s also a 20-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) to make multipage scanning and copying easy (although it doesn’t support double-sided scanning).

The cost per page is relatively low for an inkjet printer, and because it uses separate colour ink cartridges you save money in the long run. Brother LC431 ink cartridges come in a higher-yield XL size, which will print up to 500 pages (rather than up to 200 pages for the standard size), and using XL cartridges helps lower ink cost per page. Third-party compatible LC431 inks are also available for even greater savings.

All in all, this printer is a practical and cost-effective choice if you need an all-in-one colour printer for your home office or small business. Its compact size, versatile connectivity options, and relatively low cost per page make it a reliable option for everyday printing needs.
