If you’ve made a list of everything you might want in a home office printer, you’ll probably find the Brother MFC-J4540dw ticks all the boxes.

Brother developed this printer (together with the MFC-J4540dwxl, MFC-J4340dwxl and MFC-J4440dw) for the home office and, more specifically, for remote workers. The idea was to make sure that at-home workers have a printer that gives them everything they need without having to come into the office. And while we’ve hopefully said goodbye to lockdowns for a good while, when it’s needed these printers make it a whole lot easier to get things done from home.

Like others in the range, the MFC-J4540dw scans, copies, and faxes with fast printing speeds (20 pages per minute for mono; 19ppm for colour), and automatic double-sided printing. This printer, however, also comes with a two paper trays (400 sheets total), a large 6.8cm LCD colour touchscreen, Ethernet connectivity, and support for mobile tap-to-print via NFC (Near Field Communication).

Honestly, it’s easier to list the features this printer doesn’t have, than what it does. Long story short, you get all you might possibly need from an office multifunction inkjet printer. Sure, the initial purchase price might seem a little steep, but print enough and you’ll make it all back and more in lower running costs.

Unlike other ink tanks from Canon, HP, and Epson, Brother’s INKvestment ink tanks use replacement cartridges rather than refillable ink bottles. Brother sets you up with enough ink in the box to keep you going for a good while, and when you need more ink you want Brother LC436 or LC436XL cartridges. They’re fast-drying and long-lasting pigment-based inks. Get the higher-yield LC436XL inks (they are a better deal if you print a lot) and, if you want to save on costs, you can get third-party compatible LC436XL inks.

For this printer, the recommended print volume is 251-1,000 pages per month. If you often print more than that, you should consider the MFC-J4540dwxl instead. The XL version of this printer shares the same features, but has a recommended monthly print volume of 1,001- 2,000 pages, and you get twice as much ink in the box.
