If you’ve always got lots to print, you’re going to love the Brother MFC-J4540dwxl. For starters, it’s going to keep you busy for a long while — in the box, there’s enough ink to print up to 6,000 pages in mono, with four colour inks each delivering up to 5,000 pages. Brother says that’s enough ink to last up to two years, but they don’t know you like we do.

The MFC-J4540dwxl is a heavy-on-the-ink version of the MFC-J4540dw (the clue is in the name — it’s packaged with four super-high-yield XL cartridges). While that’s not the only difference, both printers give you everything you need in a home office printer, and a bit more. These are full-featured multifunction inkjet printers that even let you fax if you need to, as well as print, scan, and copy.

What else is different between the two printers? Nothing really, except that you don’t get automatic double-sided copying (sorry, but you’ll have to do it manually). On the plus side,  there’s all that ink and a more robust print engine designed for a recommended monthly print volume of up to 1,001-2,000 pages (30,000 pages maximum). In the end, it’s horses for courses, and if that’s way too much ink and you don’t usually work your way through at least two packs of paper a month then you want the MFC-J4540dw, not this all-the-ink you-can-eat XL version.

Besides the bonus ink, there are other compelling reasons to include this printer on your list of contenders. First, there’s the ink cost per page, which is thankfully very low, especially when using the super-high inks (and it’s even lower if you opt to use third-party compatible ink). You’ll love the fact that this printer can go a long time between refills. And, when you need more ink, it’s all too easy. Unlike other ink tank manufacturers, Brother has forgone ink refill bottles for much larger-capacity cartridges, and whether you opt for the LC436 or LC436XL inks, replacing them couldn’t be simpler.

Brother has also made it easy to connect to and use this printer, no matter your device. Use an Ethernet network or wireless (but not both at once), a USB cable, Wireless Direct or NFC — you have plenty of choices. Cloud printing is supported too, via Apple AirPrint, Mopria, and the Brother Mobile Connect and iPrint&Scan apps.

Brother designed this printer for remote office workers, giving them all that they needed in an office printer without having to go into the office. If you want a home office printer that’s got everything, and you print enough to warrant it, then the MFC-J4540dwxl is well worth considering.
