The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is an A3+ inkjet printer designed for professional photographers and serious enthusiasts who want full control over their images, from the camera to the gallery wall. With a maximum print resolution of 4800 (horizontal) x 2400 (vertical) dpi, this printer is capable of producing exceptional images with a wide colour gamut and prints that are both durable and resistant to fading over time.

The iPF PRO-300 is the entry model in Canon’s imagePROGRAF range. It has 10 individual ink tanks that take pigment-based Lucia Pro ink supplied in 14.4 ml bottles, including a colourless chroma optimiser that coats and seals the prints. This improves colour brilliance and print longevity and normalises reflectivity. The other nine tanks are for matte and photo black, cyan, photo cyan, magenta, photo magenta, yellow, red and grey inks. When you need ink bottle refills, look for Canon PFI-300 inks.

The printer supports borderless printing on glossy, matte, and fine art papers, at sizes up to 483 x 329 mm. It can also print panoramic images in custom lengths from 127 to 990.6 mm. The top paper tray holds up to 100 sheets and, like the manual feed tray on the back, supports media up to 380gsm. This printer also prints labels on CD-ROMs and DVDs.

Connectivity is via USB, wired LAN and Wi-Fi. There is a 7.5cm colour LCD display (not a touchscreen) that allows you to control the printer and view an image preview before printing. The printer also supports Canon’s Print Studio Pro plug-in, which enables users to print from Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and other graphics applications. Profiles are included for Canon and third-party papers.

We don’t expect an A3 printer to be small, but at 639×368×196.5mm, the iPF PRO-300 is relatively compact compared to other professional photo printers. We also assume high-quality output but not fast print speeds and, in that regard, this printer doesn’t disappoint. Canon New Zealand estimates it will take approximately four minutes and 15 seconds to output a high-quality A3 colour print with a border (borderless photos will take longer).

If you’re seriously considering this printer, you’ll know it’s a two-horse race between the iPF PRO-300 and the Epson SureColour P700. The Canon printer gets our nod. While it doesn’t support paper rolls, setup is easy, running costs are lower and the output (including grayscale images) is superb. It’s a great choice for serious photographers and worth considering for schools and photo labs.

Get your order fast! Place it before 4 pm Mon-Fri for same-day shipping from warehouses in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch (excluding public holidays). Typically deliveries to major New Zealand towns and cities take 1 to 2 days, while it may take a day or two longer for rural areas. Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions.
