Product Details: The Canon PIXMA G660 MegaTank printer (sold as the G650 in Europe, and the G620 in North America) is worth considering if you want to print photos at home and get photo-lab quality prints without paying the eye-watering cost. You can print at up to borderless A4 size, or produce panoramic prints up to 1.2 metres long, with richer and more vibrant colour and monochrome results than many other photo printers. Six refillable colour ink tanks (red and grey, in addition to cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) deliver a wider colour space (gamut) at a surprisingly low cost per print.

When the ink tanks are loaded, you should be able to print up to 3,800 10 x 15 cm photos before you need refills, according to Canon. You won’t get quite the same yield from the initial set of ink bottles, however, as some of the ink is consumed when filling the print heads during setup.

When it’s finally time to refill, the PIXMA G660 requires 60ml Canon GI63 inks (and you’ll need to buy the genuine Canon inks as there are no third-party compatible inks on the market as yet). Canon GI63 inks are dye-based ChromaLife 100 inks which Canon claims to be long-life and fade-resistant and they are comparatively inexpensive given their enormous page yield. Based on manufacturer ratings, your ink costs will be around $0.05 for each 6×4 colour print.

You pay more for an ink tank printer than a regular inkjet, but the higher purchase price is more than offset by low printing costs. Print a lot of photos and you will quickly recoup your investment. This printer includes a user-replaceable maintenance cartridge (the MC-G02) that keeps the ink system clean and helps maintain print quality (you’ll get an alert when it’s time to replace it).

The G660 is a multifunction printer with basic scanning and copying capabilities. You can scan at up to 600 x 1200 dpi and you can send scans straight to email, but there’s no automatic document feeder, so you’ll have to scan each page manually. Print speeds aren’t stellar (it will take you 47 seconds to print a borderless 10 x 15cm photo) but the G660 will print on a wide range of media including glossy and semi-gloss photo paper, as well as plain paper. Unlike Canon’s other multifunction MegaTank printers, paper input is solely via a rear sheet feeder that is limited to 100 sheets.

You can connect to the G660 via a USB 2.0 port or wireless. Canon’s PRINT and SELPHY apps, along with Apple AirPrint and Mopria, make it easy to print from a mobile device.

Overall, the Canon PIXMA G660 is a great all-rounder for photo printing at home. Print quality is excellent, ink costs are very low, and the printer offers good value for money. The lack of an automatic document feeder might be an issue if you need to scan multiple pages often, but apart from that, it’s a great choice for photo printing.
