For its compact size and budget-friendly price, there is plenty to like about the Canon PIXMA MG2460 HOME All-in-One printer. If all you need is a basic multifunction printer for your home, you’ll find it hard to beat the price. You can print, scan, and copy and all while shelling out less than you would to buy a standalone flatbed scanner.

The MG2460 is small enough to fit into almost any space you can find for it. And it’s lightweight so you can easily move it out of the way when you need to. But it is not a wireless printer — you will have to tether it to your computer with a USB cable. Nor is printing particularly fast at 8 images per minute (ipm) for mono and 4 ipm for colour. But who cares when you get results this good at such a great price? 

While this is an inexpensive personal printer, it produces high-quality prints (on plain paper or photo paper) with sharp text and vibrant colours at 4800 x 600 dpi resolution. You can also scan at 600 x 1200 dpi. But, as you might expect at this price, you don’t get everything — there is no automatic document feeder, no borderless printing, and double-sided (duplex) printing is done manually.

With some low-cost inkjet printers, you end up paying more to replace the ink cartridges than you paid to buy the printer in the first place. But that’s not the case here: the Canon PIXMA MG2460 uses PG645 (black) and CL646 tri-colour ink cartridges that are both affordable and easy to replace. Higher yield PG645XL and CL646XL cartridges are also available, producing more pages (up to 400 for Black; 300 for Colour) at a lower cost per page than standard inks.

If you don’t usually print a lot, and you only need basic scanning and copying functions, then the MG2460 might just be the bargain home printer you are looking for. Watch out though — while you will need a USB Type A to USB Type B cable for the printer to work, Canon does not include one with the printer.

Typically deliveries to major New Zealand towns and cities take 1 to 2 days, while it may take a day or two longer for rural areas. Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions. You’ll be notified when your order has been dispatched and provided with a tracking number so you can monitor the progress of your order.
