The PIXMA TS3460 is an entry-level inkjet printer for home users that’s incredibly cheap. The catch is you’ll pay as much again for replacement ink cartridges. This printer only makes sense if you don’t really print a lot or often. And if that’s you, then it’s quite the steal.

Product Details: What’s the catch, you ask? The PIXMA TS3460 is an entry-level inkjet printer for home users that well … let’s just say, doesn’t cost a lot. So little that you might be wondering why it is so inexpensive. And yet it’s a popular printer and it generally gets good reviews.

The catch should come as no surprise: you pay as much again for replacement ink cartridges. If you need a printer like this and you don’t print a lot when you do print, then this printer can still work for you. For not much change, you get an All-in-One printer that prints, scans, and copies. It prints crisp documents and vibrant borderless photos at up to 4800 x 1200 dpi, although not at speeds that will set your world afire. At top speed, expect around 4 colour images a minute. For 100 x 150mm photos, allow 65 seconds. You also get an A4 flatbed scanner, with a scanning resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi.

When you need more ink, you want PG645 or PG645XL black and CL646 or CL646XL colour cartridges. The higher-yield XL cartridges are better value for money, in that you will get more pages from them at a lower cost per page: up to 400 printed pages (black) and 300 pages (colour). Remanufactured XL cartridges are also available.

This stylish, compact printer weighs just 4kg and connects via wireless or USB. Mobile users can connect and print via Apple AirPrint, Mopria, Canon Print Service, PIXMA Cloud Link, Canon PRINT Inkjet, or SELPHY. You can also connect a camera directly to the printer with Wi-Fi PictBridge.

Canon no longer publishes recommended monthly print volumes for its printers, but at the price you pay for cartridges, this printer only makes sense if you don’t really print a lot or often. And if that’s you, then it’s quite the steal.

Things to Consider with Compatibles

If you’re considering using compatible cartridges, here are some key points to keep in mind:

Warranty

Using compatible cartridges does not automatically void your printer’s warranty. Under NZ law, a manufacturer generally cannot deny a warranty claim unless the non-genuine consumable caused the fault. For peace of mind, we stand by our products: if a cartridge supplied by Good Egg is proven to have damaged your printer, we will put it right. For more detailed information, read our full guide: Will Using Third-Party Ink Void My Printer Warranty?

Printer Firmware Updates

It’s no secret that printer manufacturers make their real profits from selling expensive genuine cartridges. To protect those profits, they often release automatic firmware updates designed to block compatible inks and toners.

We believe you should have the right to choose what goes into the printer you own - just like choosing which brand of fuel you put in your car.

How we handle it:

  • Rapid Response: Our manufacturers are experts at "re-chipping." As soon as an update is released, our cartridge chips are updated to ensure they stay compatible.
  • Our Guarantee: We only stock cartridges with the most up-to-date chips. If a firmware update ever causes an issue with a cartridge bought from us, we’ll provide a replacement - no dramas.

TIP: How to Protect Your Cartridges

The best way to ensure your cartridges keep working until they are actually empty is to disable Automatic Firmware Updates. If your printer receives an update while a compatible cartridge is installed, the manufacturer can "block" that cartridge instantly - even if it’s brand new.

  • Why do it? It prevents your printer from being "told" to stop recognising the cartridges you’ve already paid for. Turning off auto-updates keeps you in the driver’s seat.
  • What about security? We recommend turning Auto-Update OFF, then manually checking for updates every few months. That way, you decide when to update, rather than letting the manufacturer decide for you.
  • The "No Undo" Rule: Please note that disabling updates won't "fix" a cartridge that has already been blocked; it only protects you from future blocks.

How to turn off updates: Settings are usually found in the "Maintenance", "Setup", or "Service" menu on your printer’s screen. If you're stuck, just search online for your printer model + "how to turn off automatic updates" - it usually takes less than 30 seconds!
