If you’re attracted by the price, let us spell it out for you. The Canon PIXMA HOME TS5160 only makes sense for people who don’t print often, and who need a device that also scans and copies.

The gotcha with most budget-priced inkjet printers is that ink runs out quickly and ink cartridge replacements turn out to be expensive. And the TS5160 is no exception in this regard. Sure, you get great-looking prints, but if you’re expecting to print a lot of them then this inexpensive printer soon starts looking expensive.

The Canon PIXMA HOME TS5160 lives on PG-640 pigment black ink and CLI-641 dye-based tri-colour ink which come in standard and high-yield sizes (Black also comes in an extra-high-yield size). Cost per page is, as you would expect, lower for the higher capacity ink cartridges (and even lower if you use third-party remanufactured ink cartridges). Just be aware that this printer requires you to have enough black and colour ink to print, even when all you want to do is copy or scan.

While this printer gets mixed reviews, those who love it, love it. Print speed may be average, but photo print quality, at up to 4800 x 2400 dpi, is excellent. And for its remarkably low price, you get a lot — that includes automatic double-sided printing; borderless printing; a 100-sheet paper tray plus a rear paper feeder; cloud printing; and wireless, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Great little printer that this probably is, if you know you need to print a lot, think about getting an ink tank printer instead. And if you are stuck on a budget All-in-One inkjet printer, the HP ENVY 6020e should also be on your radar, although the ink cost per page is also on the high side.
