For its bargain price, the HP OfficeJet 8012e is a lot of printer. It’s not just a printer but a 3-in-1, for starters — it scans and copies, as well as prints. This is a home printer, intended for up to five people, with a recommended monthly print volume of up to 800 pages (20,000 maximum).

Features and price aside, the 8012e is not the fastest in HP’s inkjet lineup. Print speed is estimated at up to 18 A4 pages a minute (mono) or 10 pages a minute for colour. And while that doesn’t sound terrible, from a standing start, you’ll be waiting at least 13 seconds for your first mono printout, and 17 seconds or more for colour. But the prints are worth the wait. At up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, you get crisp-looking text and vibrant images that rival the results you’ll get from a colour laser printer.

Importantly, this is a wireless printer only: you cannot connect via USB or Ethernet. And although you only get one paper tray (it holds up to 225 pages), you do get automatic double-sided printing and a 35-sheet automatic document feeder (a bonus at this price point).

Before you reach for your credit card, it’s important you understand that this is an HP+ contract printer. While you are not obligated to sign up for HP+, it’s worth considering. It’s a free service that provides extra security and other features (you also get an extended warranty), but you know what they say — there’s no such thing as a free lunch. If you decide to go with HP+, there is no going back. Once you have signed up, your printer will only work with genuine HP inks (each cartridge is checked for an HP microchip; third-party compatible ink without an HP microchip won’t work).

The 8012e is also enabled for HP’s Instant Ink subscription service. Instant Ink promises convenience, in that you don’t have to remember to get new ink before you run out — your printer takes care of ordering and delivery for you. You pay a monthly subscription fee based on how many pages you print (not how much ink you use), and you can cancel at any time. If you cancel, the Instant Ink cartridges cease to work (even though they are not empty) and you will need to swap them out with replacement ink cartridges.

The 8012e takes four HP 915 (standard yield) or HP 915XL (high yield) replacement ink cartridges. The HP 915 cartridges use pigment-based inks rather than dye-based, producing crisp text and documents that are resistant to water and fading. Standard yield HP 915 cartridges are rated to print up to 300 pages (black) or 315 pages (cyan, magenta, yellow), while high yield XL cartridges are more expensive but better value (up to 825 pages, black and colour). Third-party remanufactured HP 915XL ink cartridges are also available — these are recycled original cartridges which have been cleaned, refitted, and refilled with third-party ink (the original HP microchip is left intact).

The 8012e is a good choice if you’re after an inexpensive A4 all-in-one printer for home use. Before setting up the printer, you need to decide whether or not you want HP+ and/or Instant Ink. Before signing up, be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully and consider whether the relative costs and benefits make sense for you.

Get your order fast! Place it before 4 pm Mon-Fri for same-day shipping from warehouses in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch (excluding public holidays). Typically deliveries to major New Zealand towns and cities take 1 to 2 days, while it may take a day or two longer for rural areas. Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions. You’ll be notified when your order has been dispatched and provided with a tracking number so you can monitor the progress of your order.
