Product Details:
Brother’s entry-level HL1210w is a wireless printer, but you can also plug in your USB cable and print straight from the device. You get fast print speeds (up to 20 pages per minute), and a paper tray that can handle up to 150 sheets of 80 gsm plain paper. You don’t get automatic double-sided printing, however; you have to get that done manually, following the software prompts.
With a recommended monthly print volume of 250-1,800 pages, this compact space-saving printer should keep up with most home and home office needs. As you’d expect from a mono laser printer, running costs are relatively low. The HL1210w uses Brother TN1070 toner which is estimated to print up to 1,000 pages per cartridge (a smaller starter-size 700-page yield cartridge comes with the printer). Drum and toner are separate, which helps reduce your costs as you only need to replace the DR1070 drum after printing up to 10,000 pages. While a genuine Brother toner cartridge is expensive relative to the price you pay for the printer, third-party compatible TN1070 toner and compatible DR1070 drum units are available at appreciably lower prices.
If all that sounds good to you, be aware that user reviews of this printer have been mixed. It gets high praise for easy set-up and ease of use. However, early buyers reported compatibility issues with Apple computers. There is, however, some good news: Brother has since updated its Mac printer driver and says the HL1210w will work with Mac OS X 10.7.5 and later.
If you were planning to print from a smart device, however, you’re out of luck — the HL1210w does not work with Apple AirPrint or the Mopria Print Service, and users have been underwhelmed by the limited capabilities of Brother’s iPrint&Scan app. If that’s a deal-breaker for you and you have a limited budget but want a mono laser printer, you might instead consider HP’s comparably-priced LaserJet M110we.
