Product Details: With a recommended monthly print volume of 50-100 pages a month, you shouldn’t expect to be doing a lot of printing with the HP DeskJet 2720e. But if you only print occasionally and have modest expectations, then this bargain-priced printer may be all you really need. While basic, it is an All-in-One printer and you can also scan and copy as well as print, and send (but not receive) faxes.
User reviews are mixed, and depending on which you choose to believe this is either a great little printer and absolutely worth it or so bad that it’s not worth your time. What you must know from the start, and this may contribute to the negative reviews, is that this printer is enabled for HP+. It comes with an extended warranty (two years in total) and a complimentary subscription to Instant Ink (up to six months of free ink) if you sign up for HP+ when you set up the printer.
You won’t find six months of free ink in the box with your purchase, though. And as with anything that looks too good to be true, you should read the terms and conditions very carefully. HP+ and Instant Ink are different, and you can sign up for one but not the other. You only get the complimentary six months of Instant Ink if you also sign up for HP+ though.
To get started with HP+ you have to activate your HP account and register the printer, which gives you an extra year of warranty, and a free six-month subscription if you also sign up to Instant Ink. With Instant Ink you can expect to save some money on ink cartridges in the long run, with monthly subscriptions (based on the amount of pages you print) starting at $1.99 a month. If it’s not for you, you can cancel Instant Ink at any time. But sign up for HP+ and your printer will always be an HP+ printer, which means you cannot use any ink cartridge without a recognisable HP microchip for the printer’s lifetime.
Depending on how much printing you do, Instant Ink could be a good option considering the relatively high cost per page of the genuine HP 67 and HP 67XL ink cartridges (black and tri-colour) that this printer requires. Alternatively, there are third-party remanufactured HP 67XXL inks that come with a much lower estimated cost per page and include an HP microchip.
While you get a lot for very little with this printer, there is also a lot you don’t get. That includes fast printing (you like tea or coffee, right?), an automatic document feeder, automatic double-sided printing, and borderless printing.
All in all, the HP DeskJet 2720e is only a good option if you’re on a tight budget and Instant Ink works for you, or you just need to print basic documents occasionally. If you’re printing much more than 50 pages a month and don’t want an Instant Ink subscription, we recommend looking for a different printer with a better page yield. Take a look at the Canon PIXMA MG2460 which is a standout for the price. Alternatively, if you want to print photos and you want HP+ or Instant Ink, consider the HP ENVY Inspire 7921e.
