Product Details:
HP has packed a lot into its budget-priced compact HP ENVY 6420e All-in-One printer, including a 35-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) that’s missing in the lower-priced ENVY 6020e. While that will please anyone needing to scan or copy multipage documents, there’s not much else to tell the two printers apart. Except that they do look different: the 6420e gets the chocolates for a more modern, sleek design, but (and maybe it’s down to the chocolates and the ADF) it weighs in at close to a kilo heavier.
There’s nothing much else to tell these printers apart. If you like everything about the 6020e but want an automatic document feeder, then grab this printer (it’s still as cheap as chips, even if the 6020e is less expensive).
Yes, print speeds are the same, which is to say not that fast, at up to 10 pages a minute for black and 7 pages per minute for colour. You won’t die waiting for your colour-saturated glossy photos to print, but they will take longer. Don’t expect to print thousands of pages a month, though, and not just because the price you pay for ink might ruin you — HP recommends you print 100-400 pages a month, and no more than 1,000.
So. It prints. It scans. It copies. But it doesn’t fax (you can however send faxes via your phone, using the HP Smart app). Set up is via the HP Smart app, and you’re ready to go in no time. You get automatic double-sided printing. You can print borderless photos up to A4 size. And connectivity is a breeze. You get dual-band Wi-Fi and what HP calls self-healing Wi-Fi (which ensures a reliable and uninterrupted Wi-Fi connection).
If you’re still wondering why this printer is so inexpensive, it’s because in order for it to print you need to feed it ink. You get two starter ink cartridges in the box, but after that, you’re on your own. And you have a choice — no, two choices — to make.
The HP ENVY 6420e is HP+ eligible and enabled for Instant Ink. Sign up for HP+ and you get some additional security features along with an extra year of warranty (so long as you continue to use genuine HP ink cartridges). You can also sign up for HP’s subscription ink delivery service, Instant Ink. If you sign up for both, you get three months of complimentary Instant Ink, after which you pay by the page for ink when you need it. Instant Ink is convenient because you don’t have to worry about ever running out of ink (your printer orders it automatically when it is getting low). But it isn’t for everyone.
You’re under no obligation to sign up for either of them, mind. However, if you sign up for HP+ then you will be locked into the applicable terms and conditions for the lifetime of your printer. This means that you always have to buy genuine HP ink (your printer will not work if your ink cartridges don’t have a genuine HP microchip). On the other hand, you can sign up for Instant Ink but not HP+ (you won’t get the free months that come with HP+) and you can cancel at any time, without the ongoing commitment to only use HP genuine ink.
If you’re not getting Instant Ink you will soon need to replace the starter-size ink cartridges (and very soon, by some reports). When you need ink, you want to buy HP 67 ink cartridges (black, and tri-colour) although the ink cost per page from standard-yield cartridges may have you reconsidering an Instant Ink subscription. But you get better value if you purchase the higher-yield HP 67XL cartridges. You can save even more by getting third-party remanufactured extra high-yield (XXL) ink cartridges — recycled cartridges that have been cleaned, refitted with new parts and refilled with less expensive third-party ink.
