Product Details: The HP LaserJet M110we is a budget mono printer that has lots to offer for its surprisingly low price. It matches the LaserJet M110w feature for feature but is half the price, so why is that? It’s important you know the answer to the question before you make the purchase.

The “e” in this printer’s model name signifies the M110we is a contract printer, enabled for HP+ and sold with a complimentary free six months of HP’s Instant Ink subscription service. It also qualifies for an extended warranty but, of course, conditions apply, and your willingness to accept those conditions gets you some bonuses and a printer at a substantial discount.

To get it up and running you must sign up for HP+, and you agree to buy only genuine HP toner. HP doesn’t want you buying less expensive third-party compatible toner (although none is available as yet). It is important that you read the fine print to make sure you are fully aware of all that you commit to before buying this printer — it only works if you have an HP account, and keep it connected to the internet. As a reward, HP+ gives you some enhanced security features, along with bug detection and fixing. You also get a free six-month subscription to HP Instant Ink — when the toner is low, your printer will automatically order more.

After your complimentary six months of Instant Ink, you’ll pay a monthly fee for replacement toner (but you can cancel at any time). Your monthly Instant Ink fee starts at just $1.99 but is based on the number of pages you print — not the amount of toner you use. If you decide you don’t want Instant Ink, the M110we uses HP’s standard-yield 141A toner cartridge, which includes the drum unit, and a new cartridge will print up to 950 pages.

This personal printer is the smallest in HP’s LaserJet range (W 346 x D 189 x H 159 mm) and weighs just 3.8kg. It is intended for a single user at home, school, or in the office and. with a recommended monthly print volume of 100-1,000 pages, it is not cut out for heavy-duty printing. Unless you are using Instant Ink, the cost per page from a genuine HP 141A toner cartridge is somewhat high for a mono printer and certainly high enough to make you think twice about large print jobs.

The M110we prints up to 20 A4 pages per minute at resolutions up to 600 x 600 dpi. It has a 150-sheet input tray and an output tray that holds up to 100 sheets. It handles plain paper, envelopes, labels and postcards from 65 to 120gsm. What you don’t get at this price is automatic double-sided printing (this has to be done manually) and you don’t get a control panel (just three LEDs to indicate printer status and three buttons).

You can connect to the M110we via wireless, USB 2.0, or Bluetooth, but not Ethernet. Plus you can print directly from a mobile device using Apple AirPrint, Mopria Print Service, Wi-Fi Direct or the HP Smart app.

Both this printer and the M110w represent great value for money if you’re in the market for a no-frills mono laser printer. Choosing between the two will depend on whether or not you have a stable internet connection (the printer won’t work otherwise) and if you are happy to accept the contractual requirements that come with HP+.

Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions.
