The HP LaserJet Pro M234dwe is a versatile and compact multifunction mono laser printer suited to home or small office use and teams of up to five users. Intended for low- to medium-volume monochrome printing, this reliable and efficient all-in-one will print, scan, and copy documents, and comes with wireless printing capabilities. HP claims fast printing speeds of 21-30 pages per minute (ppm), while automatic two-sided (duplex) printing will please those looking to save on running costs.

All HP M234 series printers have a 150-sheet input tray and a 100-sheet output tray. But, unlike some in the range, the M234dwe does not include an automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning — you have to scan or copy one page at a time.

The M234dwe printer uses HP+, a smart printing system that offers enhanced security features, together with bug detection and fixing. This necessitates your having an online HP account, a stable internet connection, and using only genuine HP Toner cartridges for the printer’s lifespan.

With HP+, when you purchase and register this printer you get an extra year of HP customer support (two years in total) and you’ll get up to six months of Instant Ink, HP’s ink and toner subscription service. While you don’t have to sign up for Instant Ink, there are good reasons to do so. With this ink and toner delivery service, when the toner is low, your printer will automatically order more.

After your complimentary six months of Instant Ink, you’ll pay a monthly fee for replacement toner (but you can cancel at any time). Your monthly Instant Ink fee starts at just $1.99 but is based on the number of pages you print — not the amount of toner you use.

It’s important to note that with an HP+-enabled laser printer, you have to sign up for HP+ and accept the terms and conditions. But you don’t have to sign up and use Instant Ink (and you can cancel at any time).

If you don’t want Instant Ink, the M234dwe uses HP 134A and 134X toner cartridges. HP’s 134X cartridges are much pricier than third-party compatible alternatives but your HP+ printer won’t work with any cartridges that don’t include a genuine HP microchip.

If you print enough to need the higher-yield cartridges (which have an estimated 2,400-page yield) and want the freedom to pick and choose which toner you use and when you replace it, then other HP printers in the M234 range — the M234dw or the M234sdw — will be a better choice.

Typically deliveries to major New Zealand towns and cities take 1 to 2 days, while it may take a day or two longer for rural areas. Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions.
