Product Details: If you’re looking for a colour inkjet printer for your home office or small business, you have probably realised there are way too many to choose from. So why pause here to consider the Canon TR7660a? The answer depends on what you need in a printer, how much printing you do, and what type of printing you do.

The TR7660a is a great choice for those who need to print both photos and documents, as it uses a five-ink system. Two black inks (one pigment; one dye-based) promise sharp-looking smudge-proof text documents, while also producing more vibrant colour photos. The dye-based black and colour inks are ChromaLife 100 inks, formulated to produce long-lasting, fade-resistant prints.

Standard cartridges are available with yields of up to 200 pages (pigment black) or 250 pages for dye-based black and colour. There are also high-yield (XL) and extra high-yield (XXL) capacities. The good news is that even the standard yield cartridges have a modest cost per page compared with most inkjet printers. Less expensive third-party compatible inks are also available.

You can pay less or a lot more for a home office printer. But for low- to moderate-volume printing, the TR7660a hits the sweet spot. Yes, you pay a little more upfront, but not as much as you would for an ink tank or laser printer, and the cost per page for ink is reasonable. Again, an ink tank or laser printer will produce cheaper prints, but if you don’t print a lot then this printer might be the more economical choice over the long run.

Photo print quality is very good at a maximum of 4800 x 1200 dpi, and the TR7660a matches the competition for features and functionality. It spits out prints at a reasonable clip — 15 ipm (images per minute) for mono; and 10 ipm for colour. It has an automatic document feeder for multi-page documents, and a 7.5cm colour touchscreen for easy menu navigation when using it as a standalone copier and scanner. It has automatic double-sided printing and scanning, prints borderless photos, and has a “quiet mode” which reduces noise levels.

Is this the right printer for you based on how much you normally print each month? We like to publish the recommended monthly print volume for printers, as it helps when choosing a printer that matches your printing requirements. Disappointingly, Canon no longer makes this information public. Our guess is that the TR7660a is capable of handling up to 1,000 pages a month — though this figure is an estimate and not a guarantee.

This is a relatively compact all-in-one printer that can be used via USB or Wi-Fi. And, yes, it supports mobile printing from Apple and Android devices (via AirPrint, Mopria and Canon Print). If Ethernet connectivity and an SD card slot are must-haves for you, then you want the next step up — the Canon PIXMA 8660a. Otherwise, this is a solid and reliable home office printer with all the features you will likely need — all at a reasonable price, minus the sting of having to pay too much when you need more ink.

Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions.
