Product Details: When you must have your prints in colour, and you need them fast, you want a printer like the HP Colour LaserJet Pro 4201dw. It spits out colour or mono A4 pages almost as fast as you can think, up to 33 of them per minute. And while fast is good, you’re also going to be happy with the results: sharp details and vivid colour, at up to 600 x 600 dpi print resolution. And automatic double-sided printing? Well, yes, but of course.

This is a colour laser printer, pure and simple. It doesn’t copy, scan, or fax — but you are interested in the 4201dw because you don’t need all that. You do want to be able to print from smart devices as well as computers though, and yes, you can. You can connect via USB and Ethernet, dual-band wireless, Bluetooth, Wireless Direct, Apple AirPrint, Mopria, or the HP Smart app — you can even print directly from a flash drive when you need.

The 4201dw comes with a 250-sheet tray and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, enough to handle large print jobs, but upgradeable to 850-sheet capacity if you add the optional extra 550-sheet paper tray (28N93A). It will handle everything from plain paper to photo paper including envelopes, labels, postcards, and recycled paper, from 60-200gsm.

With a recommended monthly print volume of 750-4,000 pages (50,000 maximum), this energy-efficient printer will suit small workgroups of 3-10 users. While it is not a noisy printer, it includes a Quiet Mode that reduces printer noise (at the expense of print speed). And it comes with HP Wolf Pro preconfigured to make sure your printer and information remain secure.

Starter-size toner cartridges are pre-installed in this printer and with all that printing you will be doing you are going to need new toner soon enough. When the time comes, you can choose between standard-yield HP 210A and high-yield HP 210X cartridges (the higher-yield toner is better value if you print in volume). At the time of writing, there are no third-party compatible toners on the market for this printer.

But wait…you can instead choose to subscribe to HP’s Instant Ink service (HP claims up to 50% savings on the cost of normal toner). Instant Ink isn’t for everyone, and it may not be for you, but you can try it out and cancel at any time. After you open an HP account and sign up for Instant Ink, you’ll need to make sure the printer is always connected to the internet (it won’t print otherwise). You’ll be billed monthly for the number of pages you print (not the amount of toner you use), and your printer will order more toner when it’s needed.

The HP Colour LaserJet Pro 4201dw is an excellent choice for a small workgroup that needs to print in colour. It is fast and reliable; it’s easy to set up and use; it has multiple connection options; and it is affordable. And you get the added bonus of HP’s Instant Ink service if you want to take advantage of it.

Get your order fast! Place it before 2 pm Mon-Fri for same-day shipping from warehouses in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch (excluding public holidays). Typically deliveries to major New Zealand towns and cities take 1 to 2 days, while it may take a day or two longer for rural areas. Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions. You’ll be notified when your order has been dispatched and provided with a tracking number so you can monitor the progress of your order.
