While HP’s entry-level ink tank printer, the HP Smart Tank 5105, is still pricey for an inkjet printer, the purchase price is more than made back in low operating costs.

With its smart tank system and ink sensors, you can monitor ink levels and refill the ink tanks as needed, saving you time and money on replacement ink cartridges. The printer requires HP 31 colour and HP 32XL black inks (the GT52 and GT53XL shipped with the printer are not sold locally). HP 31 and HP 32XL are reasonably priced for OEM products and have high page yields, making the cost per page comparatively low. However, this printer is not enabled for Instant Ink, and you can only use original HP inks as third-party compatibles are not yet on the market.

While specs largely match those of the Smart Tank 7005, the HP Smart Tank 5105 saves costs with cheaper construction and fewer features. You get a smaller 100-sheet paper input tray, and you don’t get duplex printing (you have to do this manually, flipping the pages when instructed by the software). While HP claims print speeds of 12 pages per minute for mono A4 pages, colour printing is relatively slow (at 5 pages per minute). Recommended monthly print is on par with HP’s other ink tanks at 400-800 A4 pages. But the maximum duty cycle (the maximum print volume the printer is capable of in a month) is lower at 3,000 pages, although that’s still decent enough for most users.

Designed for easy and efficient use, the HP Smart Tank 5105 is nevertheless an affordable low-maintenance multifunction printer for home offices and small businesses. While you pay more upfront for the printer itself, its low operating costs are your reward.

Typically deliveries to major New Zealand towns and cities take 1 to 2 days, while it may take a day or two longer for rural areas. Delivery of oversized printers that are too heavy for normal courier delivery is done by Mainfreight and may take a little longer on occasions.
