Frequently Asked Questions
Genuine HP toner cartridges are OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) products made by HP and specifically engineered to provide the highest quality prints from HP printers. On the other hand, compatible toner cartridges are produced by third-party companies.
An obvious difference between a genuine and compatible toner cartridge is the price - a compatible toner cartridge is usually significantly cheaper than an OEM cartridge. So does this mean compatible toner doesn't deliver the same level of performance or quality?
While printer manufacturers will suggest that's the case, it's not necessarily true.
The reality is that manufacturers like HP have traditionally followed the 'razor and blades' model when it comes to selling printers and toner. This means they sell printers at a minimal profit but subsequently make significant ongoing profits through the sale of expensive replacement toner and other consumables. The availability of low-cost compatible toners undermines this model, which is why OEM manufacturers claim they are of inferior quality.
Certainly, some are inferior and using them may even risk damaging your HP laser printer. But there are also high-quality compatibles which won't damage your printer and performance is similar to genuine HP toner cartridges.
The compatible toners sold by Good Egg are such products. In addition to being ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, they come with a 12-month performance guarantee, so you can buy with confidence.
Please note that cartridges sold by Good Egg are intended only for use in printers made for and purchased in New Zealand. If you own a printer manufactured for a different market, our cartridges — genuine/original as well as compatible — may not work due to different firmware settings.
If you require the very best quality printing from your HP LaserJet-P3015X laser printer then we recommend you buy genuine HP OEM toner. The genuine HP toner cartridges sold by Good Egg are very competitively priced, so you can get the quality you need without breaking the bank.
We also offer compatible toner. While not made by HP, they are guaranteed to work with your printer. If you’re looking to save money without sacrificing quality, these are a great option. Print yield and quality are similar to genuine cartridges but at a much lower price. Up to 70% cheaper!
Compatible toners are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. In addition, they come with a 12-month performance guarantee, so you can buy with confidence.
OEM printer manufacturers are making it more difficult for customers to use compatible inks and toners by pushing automatic firmware updates that prevent printers from recognising them. This is seen as an unfair practice by many because it takes away the customer's right to choose which products they use with their printer.
The solution to this is simple. All you need to do is change your printer settings so that future automatic firmware updates (which are on by default) don't occur.
It's important to be aware that the 4-year warranty of your HP printer is voided if non-genuine HP consumables have been used (see details here). For that reason, you may decide not to use compatible products until after the warranty period of your printer expires.
When you use compatible products supplied by Good Egg you're protected. In the unlikely event they are proven to have damaged your printer, our suppliers will repair, or if necessary, replace it with an equivalent model of the same or better specifications up to the value of $1,000. See warranty details here.
A toner cartridge contains the toner powder used by a laser printer to create the printed image on the page. A monochromatic laser printer only has a black toner cartridge, while a colour laser also has yellow, magenta and cyan cartridges.

Toner cartridges (black, yellow, magenta and cyan)
A toner cartridge needs replacing when it runs out of toner. How often you'll need to replace a toner cartridge depends on how much printing you do, the nature of what is being printed, and the capacity of the toner cartridge used (standard, high or extra high yield). Print yield, or number of pages that can be printed, is an estimate based on A4 pages at 5% coverage.
Another important component in most laser printers is the ‘image drum’. This transfers the toner from the toner cartridge onto the paper.
The drum is typically a cylinder made of a photoconductive material that is charged with an electrical current. When the laser in the printer exposes the drum to light, the charged areas of the drum are discharged, creating a pattern of toner on the drum's surface. The drum then transfers this toner onto the page, creating the printed image. Image drums are also called imaging units, drum units, or photoreceptor drums – all different names for the same thing.

Drum units last much longer than toner cartridges. The number of pages a drum will print before it wears out and needs replacing varies by model. For many drums it's around 10,000 pages, but for some can be up to 50,000 pages or more, depending on the nature of your printing. In short, you'll print a lot of pages before needing to change a drum.
The time to replace the drum is when you get white lines on your pages. Your printer will normally also show a message warning the drum needs replacing. A worn out drum unit can cause streaks, smudges, and blank spots on your printed pages, even if you just inserted a new printer toner cartridge. If you don’t replace the drum eventually your printer will stop printing.
Toner only ever seems to run out when you urgently need to get a print job done! The good news is that changing a toner cartridge is quick and easy. Check out this guide from HP which shows how to replace a toner cartridge in a HP LaserJet-P3015X.
This won't be something you need to do that often, but when it's required don't put it off or eventually your LaserJet-P3015X will stop working. Replacing the drum unit in a LaserJet-P3015X is straightforward if you follow these instructions from HP.
