Released in late 2023, the Brother HL-L3240cdw is a colour LED A4 printer that’s notable for its compact design, fast print speeds, quiet operation, and long-lasting components. Intended for home or small office use, this is a fully-featured workhorse printer that will happily deliver up to 1,500 printed A4 pages a month, at up to 26 pages per minute (colour and mono). Duplex (double-sided) printing is automatic, at up to 10ipm (images per minute) for mono and 5ipm for colour.

Designed for small spaces in busy offices, the HL-L3240dw holds up to 250 sheets of paper and accommodates plain, recycled, glossy papers and envelopes from 60gsm to 163gsm. Print resolution is up to 600 x 2400 dpi, ensuring clear and high-quality documents.

Why buy this printer and not Brother’s popular HL-L3230cdw? Availability, for one. Brother has not announced that the HL-L3230cdw is being replaced but stock is hard to come by, and the HL-3240cdw is its functional equivalent. While it is slightly more expensive, it is a new model with slightly faster print speeds and longer-lasting drum and belt units.

When you buy this printer, you get four cartridges of toner (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow), each rated to print up to 1,000 pages. When you want more toner, you need to get either the standard-yield TN-258 printer cartridges, or high-yield TN-258XL cartridges which are rated to print up to 3,000 pages (black) or 2,300 pages (cyan, magenta, and yellow).

You can expect low running costs for the HL-L3240CDW, thanks to its long-lasting components. When the average print job is three pages, the printer drums will print up to 30,000 pages, and the belt unit will last for up to 60,000 pages. The waste toner unit will last for up to 50,000 pages.

To provide a printer of this quality at this price, Brother has done some cost-cutting. The HL-L3240cdw comes with a simple 1-line 16-character LCD and lacks some of the features of more expensive laser printers in Brother’s lineup — notably, NFC and USB flash port connectivity.

The HL-L3240cdw is not short on connectivity options, however. You can connect to the printer via the high-speed USB 2.0 interface, Ethernet, dual-band 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi, or wirelessly using WiFi Direct. Mobile users can use Brother Mobile Connect, Apple AirPrint, or Mopria Print Services to print directly from their devices.

Compact design, fast print speeds, and automatic duplexing make the Brother HL-L3240cdw a convenient choice for home office and small office users who need to print documents regularly. For the price, it is hard to go past, and cost-conscious businesses will appreciate its low cost of ownership.
