You’ll know when you need to change your printer’s drum unit. Your prints won’t look as good as they used to, even with a new toner cartridge. You might see blurred or faded images and text, black or coloured spots, smeared toner, or thin vertical lines on your pages. Typically, you need to replace the printer drum unit after you have replaced 3-4 toner cartridges.

Not all laser printers require a separate drum unit — some use toner cartridges that include a built-in drum. If you have a mono printer that uses separate drum units, you’ll only need one drum. For a colour laser printer, you may need a single drum (for all four colours), or four individual drums (one for each colour).
